Using digital files

A range of supplementary digital files is provided. These may be word processing, presentation graphics, video or portable document format (PDF) files. To access the these files, click on the links found in the resource or, for the word processing, presentation graphics and PDF files, click on the Resources tab and then select Digital files from the left-hand menu. All the files can also be found in the folder on your disc called digital_files.

To open the word processing, presentation graphics and portable document format (PDF) files, you will need Microsoft® Word and PowerPoint and Adobe Reader. If your computer does not already have Adobe Reader installed, look in the installers folder on your disc for the appropriate installer for your operating system. Alternatively, visit the Adobe Web site to download the appropriate installer.

Following a link to a digital file may open the file within a browser window. To save these files so that they can be opened in the relevant software and edited, right-click on a file link and select Save Target As.... To view a Microsoft® PowerPoint presentation without the toolbars, once open, click on Browse>Full Screen. Note that if you do not have the fonts used in the digital files, your operating system will replace them with fonts that you are able to use. To make PDFs appear in a new window, open Adobe Reader, select Edit>Preferences, click on Internet, and then untick Display PDF in Browser.

Video

For the video, you will need version 8 or later of Adobe Flash Player. This is available to download from the Adobe Flash Player Web site. You will also need a sound card and headphones or speakers to listen to the video.

To play the video, click on the play button that sits in the centre of the video screen. Playback controls are provided at the bottom of the video screen. Use the controls to skip back and forth to various points within the video, control the volume, play/pause, or expand the video to full screen/minimise the video. Place your mouse pointer over the controls on the right of the screen for more information. If you skip back and forth to various points within the video, you may have to wait for a few seconds for the video to appear.

Printable material

All the material has been included as PDF files, which can be viewed onscreen or printed out. To access these files, click on the Resources tab and then select Printable version.
