Assessment

There are a number of ways in which student assessment in RE can be facilitated by using this resource:

  • Formative assessment – Each of the units is based around a body of knowledge and some activities that will provide evidence of student engagement and learning.
  • Summative assessment – There are some specific activities designed to test students’ developing knowledge, skills and understanding, eg sets of questions.
  • Diagnostic assessment – If you use the structure implicit in the resource, you will be able to diagnose gaps in the students’ knowledge, understanding and skills set.

Recording student progress

For ease of recording and tracking student progress, you are advised to assess the outcomes of each unit of learning using a standardised numeric system across the department, eg marks out of 20. This means that you can peg progress numerically to the Eight-Level Scheme of Assessment provided by the QCA Non-Statutory National Guidance for Religious Education (which has been assimilated into the National Framework) and thus give targeted feedback to your students.

The spreadsheet below will tally up the marks for each unit of learning and enable you to create percentages and calculate rank orders. You should replicate the spreadsheet for each class. Ideally, you would keep each student’s record separately on one departmental spreadsheet, enabling you to monitor their progress and also ensure standardisation across a range of teachers.
