Levelling
The National Framework for RE carries forward the work already undertaken by the then SCAA, now QCA, on levels. The National Framework for RE can be found here:
The attainment targets, broken down into levels of response, are provided below. Working with this should give you an idea of how well, or not, your students are performing. It should also help you to decide which of the materials in Complete RE you wish to use, and whether you need to adapt them for use in your school.
The level descriptions for attainment target 1: Learning about religion refer to how students develop their knowledge, skills and understanding with reference to:
- beliefs, teachings and sources
- practices and ways of life
- forms of expression.
The level descriptions for attainment target 2: Learning from religion refer to how students, in the light of their learning about religion, express their responses and insights with regard to questions and issues about:
- identity and belonging
- meaning, purpose and truth
- values and commitments.
The following document shows the levels of response a student might make when working in the field of religious education. It should be noted that most Key Stage 3 students will be working at Level 4 and above. These levels fit with the National Curriculum attainment levels in English, mathematics and science. You are advised to conduct your own mapping exercise against these levels, gauging which materials in Complete RE will best enable students to realise or exceed their potential.
Your assessment of students’ work should take account of these levels, and your formative commentary on the outcomes of learning should be based on the language used in the document. This will make it easier for you to show the progress an individual student is making against the National Framework. You may find it helpful to tabulate these levels and work them into your assessment policy, or use them as the policy itself.
