Dance Fever

Starter

This is an excellent introduction to a lesson on music for dance. It is advisable to follow or precede the activity with some practical listening work, to allow students to distinguish between dance genres aurally, or even some more in-depth work, such as a composing task, focusing on a dance genre (eg baroque, waltz, national dances, ballet, folk, disco, modern, etc).

Copy the following onto card and cut out around the dotted lines, forming 14 separate cards, and shuffle them so that they are not in order. Make sure you have enough cards or sets for every student/group of students in your class. You may wish to laminate these for future use. Keep a copy which is not cut into cards in case it is necessary to refer to the answers:

This starter works equally well when done by individual students, small groups/pairs (with one set of cards each), or the whole class. Distribute the cards. Students match the dances with their corresponding definitions.
