Using the material
This section provides guidance on how to use the material in The Good Practice Guide. It is recommended that you read this section before the Areas section.
To make the most of The Good Practice Guide, it is useful to be aware of the strategic elements that underpin it. These are:
Engaging in inquiry to get to know the existing situation better.
Reflecting in and upon practice in order to analyse the situation.
Developing a shared understanding by working with others.
Using specific resources to suit the inquiry’s agenda and focus.
These aspects are discussed further in the Tools section, and in the following resources:
- Working with Teaching Assistants: A Good Practice Guide (DfEE, 2000)
- Index for Inclusion: Developing learning and participation in schools (Booth and Ainscow, 2002)
- Teaching Assistants: Practical Strategies for Effective Classroom Support (Balshaw and Farrell, 2002)
- Inquiry-based consultancy: Towards school development (Balshaw, 1998)
