What do you see?

This activity comes from the work of Dr Lynn Scholefield at St Mary’s University College.

  • Set up a table with a clean cloth.
  • Create labels numbered 1 to 6 and spread them out across the table.
  • Beside each number place an artefact or image.
  • Print out sufficient copies of the ‘What do you see?’ document provided below and distribute them to the class.
  • Ask the students to walk around the table, writing in the relevant numbered boxes what they see; not what they think the objects are, but what they can actually see.

You can use this activity with a whole range of artefacts or images from any religion. The strength of the activity is that students can talk and feed back about what they have seen. You should then give them the correct terminology and detail.
