Word order (Adjectives)
Starter
For the French activity, students have to use an appropriate adjective from the list on the presentation to describe each noun given. The aim is to help students become aware of the positioning of adjectives, but it can easily be adapted to suit word order issues in another language. The task can be differentiated for the less able by replacing the adjectives that precede the noun with ones that appear after – this will avoid possible confusion of the positioning of adjectives.
Since the position of adjectives is relatively straightforward in Spanish, students should be asked to rearrange the words to form correct phrases.
PlenaryDiscussion topics include:
- Positioning of adjectives compared to English – rules and exceptions to the rules
- Different meanings of some adjectives, depending upon their positioning, ie grand, ancien in French
- Agreement of adjectives and nouns.
