Teaching notes
A word which is made from two or more primary words is called a compound word. To solve this puzzle, students have to find the compound word by identifying the primary words that make up the answer. A good strategy might be to guess what the first syllable might be, and then brainstorm compound words starting with that syllable until you find one that fits the other clues.
Solution
The first syllable is ‘watch’ and the second is ‘man’, giving watchman.
Extension
- Ask students to list other compound words that include the words ‘watch’ or ‘man’.
- Ask students to write their own riddles based on compound words, and challenge each other to solve them.
