The church spire

01forward

Spires and towers are common church features. By pointing to the sky, spires remind Christians to look upwards to God. By looking upwards, Christians acknowledge God’s superior nature, like a child looking up to a parent.

Spires and towers often contain church bells. Before the invention of clocks, these bells were used to remind Christians that it was time to go to church. They are now also used on special occasions such as weddings and funerals. On the day of a wedding, a peal of bells might be heard, whilst for a funeral there may only be a single tolling bell.
