Sikhs do not follow a set of guidelines for worship, although they do have some general patterns:
- Sermons are a common feature of a Sikh service. They are usually based on a particular theme and refer to an event in Sikh history.
- A Hukam is often part of a service. A Hukam is a randomly-chosen hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib. The hymn chosen is believed to hold particular relevance to the day of the service.
- Near the end of the service, ardas (prayer) is given.
- After prayer, special food called karah parshad is offered to the sangat.
Sikhs may also choose to worship at home.
