The word ‘ark’ is short for ‘aron kodesh’, which means ‘holy cabinet’. The ark contains the Torah (the holy scrolls of the Jewish faith) when they are not being used. The ark is usually placed on the wall of the synagogue closest to Jerusalem. The opening and closing of the ark’s doors is considered to be an honour, and may be performed by any full member of the congregation. |
