Jewish divisions

return

Like many major religions, Judaism has divided into a number of different traditions. These divisions include Orthodox and Reform Judaism. The main difference between Orthodox Judaism and Reform Judaism is that Orthodox Jews believe that the Torah was dictated by G-d to Moses on Mount Sinai, whilst Reform Jews believe the Torah to be the divinely inspired work of different people. Several other important distinctions between Orthodox and Reform Jews include:

  • Orthodox Jews believe that no changes should be made to the laws contained in the Torah, whilst Reform Jews believe these laws can be reinterpreted to become more applicable to modern times.
  • Orthodox Jews believe that only men can be rabbis, while Reform Jews allow women to become rabbis.
  • An Orthodox Jewish service is performed mostly in Hebrew, whilst a Reform Jewish ceremony is a mixture of Hebrew and the language of the local community.
