Islam is a religion based on the life and teachings of Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was born over 1400 years ago in Arabia. People who follow these teachings are called Muslims. Muslims believe these teachings were revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) by Allah (God) through the angel Jibril (Gabriel). These revelations were later recorded within a book known as the Qur’an.

From the oasis cities of Makkah and Madinah in the seventh century CE, the message of Islam went forth with considerable speed. Within 100 years of Muhammad’s (pbuh) death, Islamic states had been established in three separate continents – Africa, Asia and Europe.
