The mandir

01forward

This is the exterior of the Shree Sanatan Mandir in Leicester. Mandirs (temples) are where the religion of Hinduism is practised. They also act as a focal point for Hindu communities. Inside this mandir, there are many images of different gods. These gods express the various characteristics of a single God, or ultimate reality, which Hindus refer to as Brahman.

Although Hinduism teaches that Brahman is present throughout the universe, mandirs allow Hindus to come to a better understanding of Brahman through the presence of special images called murtis. Priests treat these murtis with the utmost respect, as Hindus believe the presence of the gods is especially strong in these images.
