Jesus

returnforward

Jesus was born in Bethlehem around 2000 years ago in the first century AD. Much of what we know about his life comes from the Gospels, which are four books in the New Testament. However, references to Jesus can also be found in the works of the Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius.

Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God and at the same time God incarnate (in human form). This means that Jesus is God in human form. This should not be confused with a type of demi-God (being half-human and half-God, like the Greek hero Hercules). Christians believe Jesus is fully human, whilst at the same time being God. Christians also believe he could perform miracles, such as being able to walk on water.

Jesus was seen as a great leader and Christians believe him to be the Saviour and the Christ. The word Christ means ‘Anointed One’ or ‘Messiah’. This is why Jesus is often referred to as Jesus Christ, and is also where the word ‘Christian’ comes from.
