The Sangha

return

The Sangha is the Buddhist order of monks and nuns. Monks are men and nuns are women who have decided to dedicate their whole lives to Buddhism. Monks and nuns usually have shaven heads. A shaven head demonstrates willingness to leave behind worldly matters such as bodily appearance.

Monks and nuns devote themselves to spiritual pursuits, such as studying the Dhamma, meditating and helping others. It is the goal of every member of the Sangha to one day achieve enlightenment.

In addition to the five precepts (rules) all Buddhists should follow, Theravada monks and nuns must follow a further five precepts:

  • Do not eat after noon.
  • Do not listen to music, dance or sing.
  • Do not wear jewellery, cosmetics or perfume.
  • Do not sleep on a comfortable bed.
  • Do not accept money.
