The enlightened one

This first unit will enable your students to come to a better understanding of the founder of Buddhism – Siddattha Gotama. At one level, it is important that they know the main facts about his life, but they also need to be able to show that they understand the impact of these events on the development of the philosophy and teachings of Buddhism.

By the end of this unit:

  • most of your students will know that modern Buddhism developed from the teachings of Siddattha Gotama
  • some students will be able to explain that enlightenment is the goal of all Buddhists
  • a few students will be able to explain that Siddattha Gotama meditated for many years on his experience before he was enlightened, and only then did he begin to teach.

Prepare by reading the support material below. (You may also wish to provide this material for your more able learners.)

Activity

Using the first activity sheet below, walk through the story of the Buddha’s enlightenment with the students. Ask students to complete the second activity sheet.

Plenary

Draw the students together into a line and ask them to rehearse in a logical sequence the story of the Buddha’s enlightenment. You could try walking it backwards – this will aid their understanding.
