Understand more about your pupils’
Readiness for Learning
Pupil Perceptions is a simple tool that can help you to:
- pick up important safeguarding issues
- understand possible barriers to learning for individual pupils and particular groups, and the resultant inhibiting of progress
- prepare more cogent self-evaluation evidence for Ofsted (including evidence of the use and impact of the Pupil Premium)
- argue cases of lower-than-expected attainment and progress with reference to both individuals and groups
- plan and implement better targeted interventions
- raise attainment and accelerate progress.
Readiness for Learning

Readiness for Learning (RfL) is a single score calculated from the responses of each child, providing an overall indication of their well-being and likely preparedness for academic progress. RfL is designed to give you a quick way to identify pupils who may require intervention, and provide a convenient single figure that can be set against data on attendance, attainment, background and other issues.
Target support where it is needed
Using individual pupils’ RfL Scores, RfL Indices can then be calculated for a wide selection of groups, and combinations of groups. This allows you to look at possible links between RfL and, for example:
- girls/boys
- ethnic groups
- poor attenders at school
- children receiving free school meals
- children who are looked after
- children who have special educational needs
- groups with lower than expected progress/attainment.
By comparing the RfL Indices of different groups of pupils, schools can build up a detailed picture of vulnerable groups, the problems that they face and how targeted interventions could help.
