Series:
Mental Arithmetic
Stafford Burndred
Key information and guidance
There is ever-increasing emphasis on students developing their skills in both mental arithmetic and non-calculator mathematics – a trend maintained by recent Government initiatives.
This series of packs provides schools with a wealth of material to plan a programme of skills development and practice; followed by effective test and exam preparation. Separate publications are provided for KS3 and GCSE in both mental arithmetic and non-calculator mathematics. In each case, the latter title builds on the work done in the former. Tests presented in the required format offer realistic test and exam practice.
For many, mental arithmetic is a forgotten capability. Plenty of practice is required – first acquiring basic number skills, including the manipulation of numbers, and then moving on to gaining confidence in solving more complex questions.
The main sections of each pack include:
- Introduction and planning
- Short cut methods
- Facts to memorise
- Speed tests
- Quick thinking exercises
- Memory exercises
- Practice tests in the required format for teachers to read out
- Answers and mark schemes
