Listening is integral to the development of all aspects of students’ knowledge and understanding of music. This pack offers a series of listening exercises exploring a range of genres. The exercises are based on music from a range of composers and artists, including:

  • The Beatles
  • Glenn Miller
  • Billy Joel
  • Karl Jenkins
  • Erasure
  • Jan Hammer
  • Vaughan Williams
  • Tchaikovsky
  • John Williams
  • Grieg

Develop knowledge, skills and understanding

Each exercise comes with an answer grid which represents bars of music. The questions can be answered within the grid and relate to the various elements of music (ie pitch, pace, dynamics, duration, timbre, texture, structure, silence) as prescribed in the National Curriculum. The exercises are intended to help students to develop their Music knowledge, skills and understanding. They can be adapted for use with GCSE students.

The pack also contains suggested other listening and optional extension work using the Internet as a resource. Teacher's notes and guidance on using the exercises in the classroom are provided.

In addition, the KS3 Music Homeworks can be used to accompany the material.

Although music is not provided with the pack, suggestions are included for where to find the music to allow for maximum benefit from the material with minimum expenditure.
