The Sikh calendar

01forward

Because some Sikh festivals, such as Diwali and Hola Mohalla, coincide with Hindu festivals, Sikhs use the Vikrami calendar (one of the traditional Hindu calendars) to determine what dates they occur on. These festivals occur on different dates each year in the Western Gregorian calendar.

Other festival dates, such as gurpurbs and Vaisakhi, are determined by the new Nanakshahi calendar, which became the official calendar of the Sikh religion in March 2003. The Nanakshahi calendar is a solar calendar which has the same number of days as the Gregorian calendar. These festivals, therefore, fall on the same dates each year in the Gregorian calendar.
