Sikhism

Sikhism is a religion that was founded by Guru Nanak at the end of the 15th century CE, in an area of India known as the Punjab (now part of both India and Pakistan). The dominant religion in the area at the time was Hinduism.

Sikhism differed from Hinduism in two main ways. Firstly, it stressed the equality of all people – this was in direct opposition to the Hindu notion of castes. Secondly, there is only one formless God within Sikhism. This clashed with the Hindu practice of worshipping God through numerous statues of gods and goddesses called murtis.

People who follow the religion of Sikhism are called Sikhs.
