Jews believe in one G-d who is both creator and ruler of the universe. G-d is believed to be transcendent (beyond time and space) and yet, at the same time, personal and close.
Although G-d is often traditionally referred to as a He or Him, most Jews believe that G-d is neither male nor female, although He may have both masculine and feminine qualities.
Jews believe that the name of G-d should not be misused. This means that the erasing or defacing of the name of G-d is prohibited. To stop His name being disrespected, Jews try not to write it at all. That is why His name has been written here with a dash between the letters ‘G’ and ‘d’. This is done out of respect for G-d’s sacred name.
