Puja may be conducted in private at a home shrine, or collectively at a temple, monastery or nunnery.

A monk or nun will often be in charge of the formal ceremony, which may include guided group chants and a sermon on, or reading from, the Dhamma. The leading monk will then normally give blessings over the congregation by flicking drops of holy, or blessed, water over them.

Attending group puja is helpful in strengthening the Buddhist community and showing support for each other.
