Rebirth

back02forward

Buddhists believe a person is made up of five elements (khandhas):

  • a body
  • feelings
  • perceptions
  • ideas
  • consciousness.

When a person dies, these five elements separate and eventually come back together to form a different person – Buddhists call this process rebirth.

Note that rebirth is not the same as reincarnation. Reincarnation involves a soul, whereas rebirth does not. The only element of a person’s prior life that carries over to the next without changing is their kamma (karma).
